I absolutley LOVE her interpretation of the relationship between the words amateur and proffessional. While I definitely think society uses "professional" lazily when describing someone who does something well, I also think being a capitalist society adds another dimension to why we use it the way we do. In our society money is king and professionals, to us, are people that are so good at something that someone will give them money to do whatever that thing is.

It never occured to me, but also totally makes sense that avante-garde and experimental filmmakers were not down with being called such. They also make some compelling arguments as to why that name doesn't fit. The one where the guy is saying he did many experiments but left them on the editing and that what he puts out is a completed work is the one that resonates the most with me. I remember trying to apply those six characteristics in my first student film. Especially the one about using materials that call attention to the medium. Putting scenes together completely void of narrative.
I'd say manifesto is probably too strong a word for this.

I am a brand spanking new, lil' baby photographer and filmmaker. So far I have worked on a few small-scale music videos and am currently filming/planning a doc on Atlantic beach. I think what I like about experimental filmmaking is the lack of structure. I feel completely free and at play when coming up with ideas in this mode. Nothing has to make any sort of sense which aligns well with the majority of my ideas. In my photography, I like shooting abandoned buildings and houses the best. Hard to say what draws me to them. Something about the clunky, less streamlined way that they're made. Their uniqueness. Seems like you never see the same old house twice. There is absolutely nothing modular about them and that is a vast departure from the neighborhoods and subdivisions of today filled with houses that look like were put together in an assembly line. Hard pivot-- music inspires almost every film idea I have.
