OK, GO!

So lets be real... Ok, Go! are total sell outs and super commercial, BUT that doesn't mean they don't make some really cool and innovative stuff. I wonder how much their eventual music video factors into their creative process for writing music. Also that early 2000's video of them was HELLA cringy.

NEW SELF PORTRAIT IDEA

I realized, after hearing everyone else's idea, that I could take the concept of a self portrait a little deeper than I had initially planned. I wanted to make it a bit more personal and expose what I consider to be the weirdest thing about me, my dreamscape. I would like to incorporate a recurring dream I've been having for as long as I can remember. Two things are always the same in this dream. There's a Woman in a blazer and there is a transaction where that person is giving me a duffle bag. Every time I have had this dream, I write down what was in the bag and where the dream took place, and if I can remember, I write down what Blazer woman said to me. Blazer woman has had all kinds of things in the duffle bag over the years such as (reading directly from the list) a dead ninja that could talk, who claimed to be my girlfriend. Location: floating platform similar to a stage in Soul Caliber"; "a bunch of legos that had this almost liquid property to them, when t...

CUCALORES AND ME

Image
So Cucalorus, Things didn't go as I planned, which is really fine in the grand scheme of things. I volunteered and was placed in transportation, which was not my first choice, but hey, get in where you can, right? By the end of the first two nights, I was just salty about the whole thing. I wasn't getting a chance to talk to anyone because I was stuck driving an empty van around downtown wilm. Saturday brought about a nice change as I was able to pick up several filmmakers from the airport and got to spend a decent amount of time with them. I was surprised at how nice the filmmakers were. Most of them barely wanted to talk about themselves and were very interested in my ambitions. My favorite experience was definitely my conversation with Melanie Zoey, the director of Spanko. I was shuttling people from Jengo's to the downtown area and overheard a few passengers talking about an exchange between a filmmaker and some dude who was asked her, at her Q&A after the scree...

SELF PORTRAIT

It's going to be impossible for me to make a self portrait film without it being a bit odd because I, the film's subject, am kind of odd. I am thinking, at this moment that I want there to be a sense of pov in the majority of the shots in the film. I'm thinking one to represent the world being seen through my eyes and another to represent my view of myself or a skewed view of myself that could show insecurities etc. As far as sound goes: I love music, it's like one of my favorite things in the world and kind of punctuates my life. Without being able to use pre-recorded music I plan to create the soundscape using musical instruments but not actually making music, but just having sounds in it that sort of punctuate the film.

WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT SOUND DESIGN

I think the most important thing I learned is that there are some creative, talented people in our class. I also learned that sound design is wayyyyyyy not what I thought it was, especially when it comes to Experimental film. I learned that sound can be recorded in fragments, with no direction and come together to create something that is far greater than the sum of its parts.

APROPOS CUCALOROS

As a first time film festival goer, I kind of don't know what to expect. As far as what I'd like to get out of it, hmm I'd like to meet other grassroots filmmakers that live in the area.  I feel like you can always use more film friends. As of this very moment, I'm still trying to get a position as a volunteer so I can really connect with new people. So far my plan for films I'm seeing: El Angel @ 10:15 on this thursday night. Obviously I'll be seeing more, just don't know what yet. Actionable Challenges: 1. Speak to a filmmaker with a movie in the festival. They will most likely be able to offer some guidance to a neophyte such as myself. 2. Make a new friend that is active in the grassroots film community in Wilmington. This includes, but not limited to, exchanging contact info, talking about similar interests in film making, and concluding the exchange with a hug. 3. Ask and insightful question during a panel discussion. This is the one I'll p...

Shooting ON FILM

In my experience shooting on film, I learned that I should have started there. Any person whom's't'd ever wants to capture images should have to start on a completely analog, film camera in order build a solid foundation of knowledge and skills. I started with a digital camera that has an easy mode that turns it into a point-and-shoot. Digital cameras remove that whole trial and error phase of film photography, which is fine for folk who just want to take a picture, but doesn't really serve us as film students too well. I think we need that experience of dicking up an entire roll of film because something was done wrong because it's a huge teaching moment. Plus 35mm images look really rad!
