SELF PORTRAIT RESPONSE

I am torn here. I like that my piece turned out ok, but I am a little disappointed in myself for my negligence in keeping up with the assignment. I'll try and stay positive in this response, though. So, I thought it was exhilarating to be forced to shoot and edit a film in one night. There were interesting challenges in shooting alone. For example, when shooting by myself, using an 85mm lens that was stopped way down because it was getting dark, getting myself in focus was really tricky. Basically I had to frame myself next to a tree branch, get the branch in focus, then stand next to it. Through all this I learned that I am capable of more than I thought when the pressure is on. I really had to be resourceful when coming up with personal content for the film. I go to the bridge at sunset a lot by myself and I don't tell anyone that because there is kind of no one to tell. I used the phone conversation with my brother because I feel like I am more myself in those conversations than I am, ever. And finally, thanks to very good friends, I was able to pull of an abridged version of my recurring dream reenactment.

I realized, after hearing everyone else's idea, that I could take the concept of a self portrait a little deeper than I had initially planned. I wanted to make it a bit more personal and expose what I consider to be the weirdest thing about me, my dreamscape. CUCALORES AND ME

So Cucalorus, Things didn't go as I planned, which is really fine in the grand scheme of things. I volunteered and was placed in transportation, which was not my first choice, but hey, get in where you can, right? By the end of the first two nights, I was just salty about the whole thing. I wasn't getting a chance to talk to anyone because I was stuck driving an empty van around downtown wilm. Saturday brought about a nice change as I was able to pick up several filmmakers from the airport and got to spend a decent amount of time with them. I was surprised at how nice the filmmakers were. Most of them barely wanted to talk about themselves and were very interested in my ambitions. My favorite experience was definitely my conversation with Melanie Zoey, the director of Spanko. SELF PORTRAIT

It's going to be impossible for me to make a self portrait film without it being a bit odd because I, the film's subject, am kind of odd. I am thinking, at this moment that I want there to be a sense of pov in the majority of the shots in the film. I'm thinking one to represent the world being seen through my eyes and another to represent my view of myself or a skewed view of myself that could show insecurities etc. As far as sound goes: I love music, it's like one of my favorite things in the world and kind of punctuates my life. Without being able to use pre-recorded music I plan to create the soundscape using musical instruments but not actually making music, but just having sounds in it that sort of punctuate the film.
